- Xiu Xiu’s new experimental record is an absolute trip. I highly recommend listening to this at a high volume outside. Basic structures feel like mirages. It messes with you. Nothing on the album hits harder than Pumpkin Attack on Mommy and Daddy, which launched me into another stratosphere upon my first listen. It’s like if Frontier Psychiatry by the Avalanches were updated with today’s production value.
- I was anticipating this one so much. It’s really, really good. Nothing was as good as the second single, Uncomfortably Numb (feat. Hayley Williams), but few songs are. They are one of the most technically impressive rock bands in the business. They showcase their math rock and emo roots while also evolving to highlight a beautiful maturity in their sound.
- I guess I was expecting to click with this more than I did, but Jenny Lewis is undeniably talented and a good songwriter. I didn’t love any songs on here, but it is collectively a solid project.
- Not one of my favorite hip hop projects of the year, but there are moments that stand out. Fall Threw (feat. Young Thug & Gunna) is so fun.
- Wallows, which features the guy from Thirteen Reasons Why that my students said I looked like after I shaved, are not wrong. Nothing happens. It’s boring, unoriginal, and actually begs the question: who at Atlantic thought this was a band to invest in? It feels slimy.
WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?
- I need to listen to it again, because twice in a row is apparently not enough. This album was something else. I really, really enjoyed it. The singles mesh well here. bad guy is fantastic. So is i love you. I guess, I love it? I’m not sure yet.
- THE TWILIGHT SAD, YOU HAVE BEEN DEMOTED. The band of my dreams, OWEL, crushed my pathetic soul with this project. I’ll save some of the commentary on it for a feature article I’ll have about them in the near future, but just know this: if you are reading this, listen to this. It’ll linger with you for a long time.
